Formerly known as Chekov and Co. Shipyards, the Baltimore Navy Yard was purchased by the US Navy in 1800. The Yard became famous for building the Ship of the Line Independence and the 44 gun Frigate Guerriere, named after the victory over the British 38 gun frigate in 1812. The Yard's current Commandant is Lieutenant Thomas MacDonough of The American Navyƒƒ. The Yard is just outside the City of Baltimore and is well-protected by numerous artillery batteries, plus the Independence and the Guerriere, which have been kept inside the Chesapeake Bay due to the British blockade.
